Richard V. Hamilton, III- War Hero
"A hero of the Vietnam War" says the two Sliver Stars and three Purple Heart medals. He was a former Presidential Honor Guard at the White House and responsible for over-seeing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider" in Arlington. In fact President Gerald R. Ford went out of his way, personally, to declare his heroism by pinning the Distinguished Service Medal upon his wounded body.

It came to pass that on July 8th, 1993 in the Federal District Court, in Columbia South Carolina, Richard was sentenced to 15 years in Federal Prison, for possession of 20.48 grams of cocaine. This sentence was imposed on a first-time offender who never had a parking ticket and on a man who never before had purchased, sold or used illegal drugs nor received any money whatsoever from drugs.

Despite the life threatening obstacles that face inmates every day Richard was determined that prison would not be a waste of time. He learned over the years in prison that when one door in life seemingly closes, another can open. When Richard was able to regain a positive attitude and put his self pity aside he found a way to become his brother's keeper by helping others. He assisted 119 inmates earn their GED's (high school diplomas) and taught 105 inmates to read and write. He used prison time to add a Master's Degree in Health Administration to his Masters in Business Administration.

My duties are: To oversee all aspects of recruiting, hiring, training, and daily supervision of all personnel staff including five (5) direct reports. I plan, coordinated and supervise the volunteer program through direct supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator. I created, implement, and control the annual operating and capital budgets. I direct and manage all fund raising events for the organization. I function as the key person to interface -with Federal and State Prison officials. I oversee all accounting functions; prepare monthly reports to Board of Directors, including reconciliation accounts, preparation of budget variance & narratives. I also speak to audiences of all sizes and ages about prison and the negative effect that wrong choices could have on their lives...
